Movie Review -:

Star actor Ajith Kumar’s latest release is a road drama and crime thriller, the mos t interesting aspect of which is the stunn ing landscape of Azerbaijan in which the film is set. In Perseverance, Arjun (Ajith) and Kayal (Trisha) are a couple on the ve rge of divorce. On their way from Baku t o Tbilisi in Georgia, where they live, Kay al is kidnapped by an initially friendly Ta mil couple, and Arjun now has to rescue Kayal. The film is an adaptation of the 1 997 Hollywood release Breakdown.

The story begins with Kayal confessing t o an extramarital affair and filing for div orce. To add a touch of misogyny, Arjun’s relentless search for his wife after her ki dnapping and his willingness to go are re peatedly compared to how unworthy sh e is – a feature that doesn’t seem to be p resent in Breakdown.

Perhaps this is director Magizh Thirume ni trying to create a moral dilemma for t he hero. Or, as is customary in Tamil cine ma, male directors seem to be willing to go to such lengths when it comes to writ ing female characters. Trisha can do not hing but be embarrassed by her soft-spo ken husband until she is kidnapped and te rrorised by a Tamil couple in Azerbaij an.

The pair in question are Dixit (‘Action Ki ng’ Arjun Sarja) and Deepika (Regina Ca ssandra). Deepika has a ‘personality dis order’ in the usual Tamil film attempt to denigrate the mentally ill. Her mental co ndition also makes her a brutal killer.Aft
er Valimai was released in 2022, after se veral delays, the joke was that the film h ad more bike stunts than actual plot – du e to Ajith’s known love of racing -. In Per severance , you could substitute bikes fo r all sorts of four-wheelers, and that jok e still applies. It’s time someone pointed out to the actor that it’s entirely possibl e to stunt on camera without dragging u s through a three-hour movie with nothi ng else to do.

The sprawling sand dunes of Azerbaijan, the small, isolated towns and their rugg ed inhabitants all have more interesting personalities than the film’s protagonist. Om Prakash’s cinematography is comm endable for this. The landscape is a welc ome relief from the aimless meandering of the plot.

In an accidental return to the narrative s tyles of old Tamil films, Ajith is attacked by various villains throughout Persever ance , which he fights inexplicably like a professional until the end. The actor pla ys a soft-spoken character, not prone to outbursts of emotion like most Kollywo od heroes. But even when this aspect of his character is brought out, Ajith’s perf ormance is as dull as the dull story he tel ls.

The film’s big reveal makes you wonder why the villains had to devise such a co mplex plan in the first place, apart from giving various characters a chance to lec ture Kayal and Arjun at knifepoint.Anir
udh’s background score is hard to distin guish from the other high-decibel music al variations found in his recent films.

Perseverance has the effect of a dark tra velogue. You’re more likely to search for the stunning filming locations and the ch aracters of the Azerbaijani actors in the film than to recall the actual plot of the b ig-budget commercial you recently sa w.
