Story-;

A pregnant woman is told that the foetus is like Abhimanyu from the Mahabharata, listening to everything she says and learning from it. When the baby is born, they give him the nickname Sulthan. He grows up and claims th at he’s Lord Krishna standing with the Kauravas. A villager calls him Karuppan, a guardian diety. A few months later, the villain calls him a 100-thalai Ravanan (100-headed Ravanan). “Naanum Ravanan thaan-da” (I am Ra va nan too) he adds, for good measure. Sulthan, Bakkiyaraj Kannan’s latest film featuring Karthi, is neither Maha bharata nor Ramayana — it’s a standard Tamil masala fare, hardly moving or entertaining.

Sulthan is the story of an eponymous hero (whose real name is Vikram), a robotics engineer from Bombay, stuck with the task of rescuing his father’s henchmen, all 100 of them, from extra-judicial murder by the police. Karthi, who plays Vikram/Sulthan, Working as a Robotics Engineer in Mumbai, Sulthan (Karthi) leads a peaceful life, unlike his father (Napoleon), who is a gangster in Vizag. Sulthan is raised by Mansoor (Lal) and 100 rowdies.After his father’s death, Sulthan decides to reform his rowdy brothers and also decides to save a village’s lands from being taken by a corporate company.has said in many interviews that he was so impressed by this premise that he agreed to do the film immediately. I wish he, or just about anybody else, heard how the rest of the story goes!

Movie Review-;

The role of Sulthan is heavier for Karthi. It is too early in his career to do such a heavier role. In Tamil  one needs a mass hero to pull off such a heavy subject. Otherwise, Karthi has done a decent job. Rashmika is okay as a village belle. She lacks scenes that elevate her character. There are not enough love scenes between the lead pair to es tablish their relationship, barring the cause of the village. Lal as uncle Mansoor gets a positive role and he de liv ers. Yogi Babu’s fun works in portions. KGF fame Ramachandra Raju aka Garuda gets a powerful entry as vill ain. But just after one fight, he is no where in the film till the climax fight. He tries to justify with a dialogue, but he is shown as a weak villain which isn’t justifiable. Main villain Nawab Shah just fills the spot. He doesn’t offer any val ue to the film. The Sulthan’s 100 brothers have done a neat job. For instance, while the entire film rev olves arou nd agriculture, the farmers in the village are treated only as poverty porn Unempowered, dejected and waiting around for someone to come and rescue them. We don’t understand these individuals, their needs or their pre rogatives; we simply know they’re suffering.

The film reduces the life of a farmer to a montage song. Perhaps we should just be glad that there is minimal lec turing about organic or traditional farming. To the farmers, Sulthan is god incarnate, no nuance neces sary. Wri ter-director Kannan has failed to deliver an engaging action-packed film. At many portions, the film loses the ba lance. It returns but it is not enough to sustain the momentum. The makers made a mass masala film and tried to make it look like a package. But it is not a well-package. Songs are damp squib and they often obstruct the flow of narration. Especially the romantic song between Karthi and Rashmika right after the latter accepting the for mer’s love proposal is not in good taste. The Tamil flavour is also clearly visible which makes Tamil audience disc onnect to film at times. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score is the big asset for the film which elevates the scenes. But it can’t rescue the film. Editing is poor as the draggy scenes were not chopped. Some Funny Scenes Action Episodes Over Build-Up Scenes Draggy Portions.Because barring the premise, the film is old wine in an old bottle.

Sulthan urges all his men to move to a village to protect farmers from an evil overlord. Fight. He meets the hero ine — a fair damsel who looks awfully out of place in the distraught village — and falls in love. Song. The overlord has a corporate boss with an unbearable Tamil accent. Punch dialogue. Someone close to the hero dies. Sentime nt. Villain returns. Climax fight. Subam. To be fair, there is nothing wrong with the formula itself. After all, these are beats that have worked since time immemorial. Where Sulthan falls short is in what happens between the be ats. Without a strong moral core, the film neither evokes empathy for those Sulthan seeks to save, nor does it inspire respect for what he stands for. “The performance of Malayalam actor Lal, who plays father to Karthi in the film has been getting terrific responses from all corners, thanks to his astonishing acting chops, which the audience could emotionally connect with. Written and directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, the film revolves around a young man who plays saviour to a village seized by a group of rowdies. How he fights the troublemakers and powerful men behind them serves as the crux of the film.

Great Locations, Great Cinematography, Great Camera, Great Screenplay, Epic Stunts and Fights. Epic Storyline and an Awesome Plot twist! Hats-Off to the entire team.” The humour is misplaced, most of it is about shaming Yogi Babu’s physical appearance. The romance is convoluted; there is stalking, even if a notch down from the director’s previous outing Remo, that took a lot of flak for glorifying it. The villain(s) get little by way of backgr ound or motive. We are expected to take it for granted that the main villain is a corporate monster because we see him in suits and imported cars.The henchmen are treated no better; we can hardly tell one from the other. In fact, the film makes a deliberate choice to present them as this caricature. There is a scene where they are arou sed from sleep by the smell of blood — they are all shown sniffing frantically. In another scene, Sulthan makes the m all kneel down in front of him and lectures them with a stick in hand. To the henchmen, Sulthan is the bene vol ent dictator, they might revolt, but they return in surrender. There are so many characters who come and go with out a blip in the film’s universe.

Sathish appears as Sulthan’s friend and disappears in no time. MS Bhaskar is was ted as the lawyer. Mayilsamy, blink and you’ll miss him.  Hareesh Peradi’s scene could have been completed with newspaper clippings. Rashmi ka Mandanna, well, she gets a somewhat better deal than most women in commercial entertainers do.Napole an as Karthi’s father and Lal as a foster-father have played their roles effectively. The two villains – Nawab Shah an d KGF Ramachandra Raju have got to play weak roles. Yogi Babu’s comedy is okay.  The film is lavishly shot, but it doesn’t boast top-class technical output. Vivek Mervin’s songs are dull. None leave any impression.Cine matogr apher Sathya n Suryan (Khaki and Khaidi) seems to have developed a penchant for filming action and chase scen es with vehicles in the night effect.The film is lengthy, needs to be trimmed a lot, especially the portions in the se cond half. Dialogues are okay. The protagonist saving a village for his father’s promise is too routine. The plot li ne is as old as the hills and rocks that are shown around the village in the film.

The motive of the villains for the agricultural lands is also not convincing. The villain wants the lands of this villa ge for his iron mining which is wor th 10,000-Crore. All these make Sulthan a cliched story. Writer-director Kann an made Sulthan a routine commercial potboiler that lacks punch. Let alone villains, even the Sulthan’s 100-me mber army also can’t match his strength. Sample this. Stout, well-built body builder Michael doesn’t win in a fight with Sulthan. This fight episode is unconvincing and unwarranted totally. The rift within the Sulthan’s army, lea ving Sulthan alone in a trouble and they just returning at the climax after learning the truth are all cinematic lib erties. It is pretty evident that director Kannan wants an unrealistic approach in elevating Sulthan’s heroism. Th e build-up scenes are overdone and irritates the viewers at times. What is ironic is that the main villain often des cribes himself as Raavan and also describes Sulthan as Raavan, errr with 100-heads. Ideally, Sulthan is Rama who stood up for Dasaratha’s promise and fights for a village which he has no connection with. Still, the villain calls him Raavana. The only person for whom the film works is perhaps Karthi. But, in spite of his best efforts and fa ith in this endeavour, Sulthan is confused and commonplace.

Another genre of Mass film in the list of Karthi’s films after Kaithi. It is a Must Watch film. It’s the story of the life of the Sultan family. Memorable acting by Karthi, Rashmika, Lal, and Yogi Babu. Though the concept is routine, th e cine-goers have been loving the endearing chemistry between the lead actors and the unconventional exec uti on of the film which is appreciable. The duo’s acting stints have garnered an immense response from both critics and the audience. Notably, the film marks Rashmika’s debut in Tamil and as expected the actress’ role as a village belle has left a mark with the cine-goers.”Karthi has played to the gallery. It is a typical mass role and a cakewalk for him. Rashmika Mandanna is completely wasted in the film. The episodes of police commissioner and Sulthan are hollow. Police boss threatening to encounter Sulthan’s brothers and Sulthan trying to save them is dealt poo rly. Sulthan has some moments. Some funny scenes in the first half and the well-shot action episodes give a treat to action lovers. But the film on a whole does not live up to all the hype of the protagonist. The problem with Sul than is that its antagonists fail to challenge the hero. Barring killing uncla Mansoor, the villanism in this hero-ce ntric film is cornered, weakened.
