Movie Review-;
The film opens with the death of a judge. As there was no rust in the case, the media and the public began to qu estion the efficiency of the police. When ordinary policemen could not prove the case, the commissioner himself suggested a name – Pon Manikyavel. The assassination took place even before the Deputy Commi ssioner, Pon Manikyavel, was fully involved in the case. That too is not ordinary murder, it is done after thre atening to kill. A police officer was killed after the judge. Manikyavel then realized that the third lot fell on a business tycoon and offered him security with special consideration and kept his word. The film explores who committed the mur de rs, its causes, Manichaeus’ investigative style, and elements of action-romance. AC Mugil Chellappan’s Pon Man ickavel establishes the story from the word go without wasting any time. But little do us viewers know that the re isn’t much to be happy about. The film is a hotchpotch of several cop dramas we have seen in Kollywood over the years. The only difference is the protagonist as this is the first time he dons a cop’s uniform. By now, you mu st be able to guess what the cop is after and what his course of investigation would be.
But will there be respite from cliché and unpredictable scenes?The protagonist melts at the sight of tears and tries to execute justice, the protagonist prepares to leave his beloved job, the crimes committed by the force of money, the criminals escaping from the law by influence, the flashbacks that show revenge and the causes, the issue of female security, the psycho villain and so on. The story and screenplay failed to impress the audience as it had already been seen in other films. The screenplay written by the director did not have the power to capti vate the audience. A High Court Judge is killed at his home. He has been shot multiple times and his head is mis sing from the spot. The manner in which an influential person has been brutally murdered sent shock waves ac ross the police department. After several discussions on who should take up the sensational case, someone su ggests Pon Manickavel (Prabhu Deva), a brilliant and focused officer who quit the profession a while ago for a reason which no one is aware of. He is asked to join the duty soon and starts investigating the case by quest ioning the suspects one by one. When the department has pinned high hopes on Manickavel, two more people get killed, making things worse for them.
Meanwhile, he befriends Arjun K Maran (Suresh Menon), someone who is in the hitlist of the killer, asks money from him and promises to protect him in return. But he gets attacked twice, albeit he escaped unhurt. The CCTV footage of a suspicious old man which cops obtain leads to some twists and turns about an officer in the depar t ment. With this, they hope to nab the criminal and save Badrinath (Sudhanshu Pandey), the fourth person in the killer’s list. Can Manickavel save Badrinath’s life? Perhaps the only prime positive aspect of this whodunit is ho w Prabhu Deva has effortlessly pulled off his role as a cop. This is for the first time that the veteran actor-cho re ographer-filmmaker essays a police officer and he looks tailor-made for the role, thanks to his convincing body language and subtle expressions. The action scenes prepared by Anpariv are in the path of typical Tamil films. Th e film does not do justice to the label of action beyond the average experience. The audience did not get any such benefits as the track of the film was not stretched even in areas like Investigation – Thriller. The background mu sic composed by D Imman was in keeping with the character of the film. The songs, including ‘Uthira Uthira’, were pleasant to listen to, but were not needed in the film, or used in a way that was adaptable to the film.
The footage captured by KG Venkatesh is a perfect fit for such an action film, with an average quality photograp her. There are some loopholes in the editing, including not feeling a flow in adding scenes.Prabhu Deva’s portr ayal of a police officer fills the screen with heroism on many occasions, questioning whether he should work for the people or for the government, but even after the film, the protagonist has not reached the point where it re mains in the minds of the audience.The overall problems in the making did not allow the film to rise. Though it was a disappointment to the audience for the film, which was supposed to be a milestone as Prabhu Deva’s 50th film, ‘Pon Manikyavel’ is a film worth seeing onceThe background score by Imman is effective while cinematogr aphy by KG Venkatesh is apt for the sequences. What makes the film unengaging after a point is the screenplay which falters because of the lack of gripping characters and performances. Prabhakar as Manickavel’s subordi nate and Suresh Menon as his friend have good screen space, but their characterizations are unimpressive. A weak antagonist who is introduced much later and lack of intriguing confrontation between hero and villain, too, is evident, which mars the story’s flow.
Mahendran shines in the small role he has to play, though. The movie ends up becoming a potpourri of predicta ble twists and suspense-filled ineffective sequences. With the aim of fattening things up, the director has scra ped all the numbers used in films of similar genres and looked at the pie in this film. None of the songs, including the item number, were particularly good for the film. Though not properly added, the image has reached the po int where it can be seen due to the strength of the spices and the presence of Prabhu Deva.The highlight of the film is seeing Prabhu Deva in full action packed form. Though unrelated to the story, the chemistry between the Pr abhu Deva-Nivetha duo has helped keep the audience from getting bored. Mahendran, Sudhanshu Pandey and Suresh Menon also performed their roles flawlessly. The different role of Prabhakaran who played Kalake yan in Bahubali was attractive. But like the other characters, this character is affected by the shallowness of the cast. The female lead played by Nivetha Pethuraj comes and goes as the protagonist’s wife, but we wish her role was written in a better way. The twists become predictable as the story progresses and we lose interest in the proceedings by the time the film nears its climax.
