OTRAI PANA MARAM

OTRAI PANA MARAM

After the final battle, LTTE soldiers tried to commit suicide by consuming cyanide. Newcomer Rajaiah, the hero who rescues and shelters one of the heroines Navayuga, shelters and raises as his daughter an orphaned girl at the blast site. The three travel to their post-war futures.

At that time, Rajaiah, a newcomer who saw the insecurity of Eelam Tamil women, started an association to bring the women together and try to put an end to the crimes against them. Was his attempt successful? Isn’t it? It is a ‘single palm tree’ to say that as a way of blaming the Eelam Tamils and with the intention that the LTTE’s war is of no use.

Newcomer Rajaiah, who has played the lead role and directed the film, has tried to emphatically record that the condition of the soldiers in the LTTE organization has changed badly since the last war. Especially, the wives and children of the soldiers who died in the war are starving for several days and some women have become slaves to recover from their hunger and the Tamils themselves are using them for their lust.

Navayuga, who is a key figure in the LTTE, is protected by the newcomer and travels with him, but his lines and the events around him are against the LTTE.

In general, films that focus on Eelam Tamils record the atrocities they faced, sexual violence against women, the condition of living as refugees after losing everything in their own land, and tell the world that even after the last war, they are politically deceived. However, the director shows the brutality of the Sinhalese soldiers who committed many crimes in this film only in the opening scene, and then moves the film as if the Tamilians are the enemies of the Tamils. There is a lot of caste discrimination among the Sri Lankan Tamils, and if the situation arises, the militants will kill those who are with them, and many scenes are set against the Tamils.

Both Mahinde Abhisinde, who has shot the scenes in Sri Lanka, and C.J. Rajkumar, who has shot the scenes in Indian locations, have portrayed the plot and characters naturally.

Ashwamitra’s music, though the songs and background score are not touching, travel without deviating from the story.

Nayyavan Razaiah, the director who adds justification to his work, says that he has recorded the true events that happened in Eelam after the final war. But it seems clear that he has taken this film with the intention of conveying to the people that the LTTE organization and its activities have not brought any benefit to the people.

The director says that the LTTE’s expulsion of the Muslims in the north was the biggest historical mistake they made, why did they do that? Does not explain that. Likewise, a person who wants to fight for the protection of women by forming an association does not give a clear explanation as to why he criticizes the struggle of the LTTE.

All in all, ‘The Single Palm Tree’ is a poor piece of work that will further torment the Eelam Tamils who are reeling from the defeat.
