Indian Army have undertaken “Operation Thiruvallur” involving the safe disposal of nearly 10 tonnes (approx.) of unexploded ordnance, which had possibly been collected inadvertently by some factories over a number of years located in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. It is an intricate and complex  effort involving many weeks of detailed planning and coordination with the civil authorities of Tamilnadu Government. The operation is a classic demonstration of joint coordination and planning undertaken between the Indian Army and State Government, on whose request the operation has been  approved by Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The aim of the operation is to give a safe environment for citizens in and around Gummidipoondi area in Thiruvallur.

The operation involves segregation and disposal of unexploded ordnance from a metal scrap dump, now covered with undergrowth. The overriding factor whilst planning and undertaking the operation has been safety. The operation is likely to continue for 3-5 days. 40 percent of the explosives have been successfully demolished by the Army Bomb Disposal Team. Dakshin Bharat Area under the Southern Command of Indian Army is undertaking this sensitive operation.
