Oh, My Dog opens with a man called Fernanado (Vinay Rai). He is a rich dog owner and breeds the best of dogs. Consistently, his dogs have been winning dog shows back to back and are just a step away from creating a world record. On one fine day, he decides to kill a puppy as it was born visually impaired. But the smart dog manages to escape from it. Little Arjun (Arnav Vijay) finds him and raises him. This decision later comes back to bite Fernan do at one of the dog shows. What would you expect in a film that brings together three generations of actors fr om the same family? Something fresh, different and memorable, right? Oh My Dog which features a real-life g randfather-father-son trio (Vijaykumar, Arun Vijay and Arnav Vijay for the first time on-screen), is painfully generic and predictable, starting from the scratch. There are too many inconsistencies that Sarov Shanmugam overlooks, which further adds to the lazy writing. Mahima Nambiar, whose performance I quite liked in Arun Vijay’s character sketch and his flashback sequences are definitely interesting .
Every film is only as good as its content and not the reputation of actors or stars—Oh My Dog drives home the point. Professional dog breeder Fernando (Vinay Rai) instructs his assistants to kill a blind pup. Somehow, the pup escapes from those men, and ‘magically’ ends up at Arjun’s (Arnav Vijay) door. The boy adopts the pup, and names him, Simba. The pup accompanies Arjun wherever he goes—even to school. He is playful and the elders of the house have a hard time disciplining him. Sarov Shanmugam establishes that in every frame carefully. Arjun keeps Simba in his room and feeds him milk and idlis. His parents are clueless about the pup. Though the bond between Arjun and Simba keeps the film on the course, hardly it moves you. Arun Vijay is back with a film after a long time and this time, he comes with a pack of surprises called Arnav Vijay. His recent flick Oh My Dog was re leased on Amazon Prime Video today and has opened to mixed responses from the audiences.
The screenplay of Oh My Dog is ok. It has too many good intentions towards animals, dogs especially and it gets registered into your brain right in the first few minutes. Arjun, the little soul of the film, by nature, is a kind a co mpassionate child who enjoys every part of nature. Also, he just loves dogs. The film establishes that disabilities are natural and shouldn’t be mocked. Watching Arjun bond with the puppy Simba (Siberian Husky) is a real treat for dog lovers.Fifteen minutes into Oh My Dog, you guess this is how the rest of the story will flow. There is very little insight into what Arjun’s father (Arun Vijay) is; his personality and why they exactly reel under financial pr essure. Arjun’s parents are slowly warming up to Simba. Months pass by. Simba is a grown-up dog now. The plot of the film is completely unpredictable. The audiences already know that this cute puppy, which is rescued at the beginning of the plot is going to win the hearts at the end of the film. The story has so many interesting and un expected twists and it keeps you going on and on.
Arjun wants Simba to win an international competition. How he achieves it all, in the end, forms the rest of the story. Somehow, I felt li ke I caught the desi version of 101 Dalmatians. There’s the sense that someone prepared a list of clichés that had to be dutifully adhered to. (You’ll know what I’m referring to when you watch the film). Coming to the performan ces, Arnav Vijay’s debut performance is worth appreciation. The kind of performance he has given, that too for someone of his age, is just mind-blowing. However, the sequences involving the Husky, Simba, keep us engaged. It never stops to amuse how a film that has a gorgeous four-legged Siberian Husky can run for close to two hours-forty-something minutes, and still does nothing to you, emotionally. It is an intere sting premise—one that could have flourished with better ideation, story, and screenplay. Both Vijayakumar and Arun Vijay are wasted in this underwhelming film.
He carries the role with ease as he always does. Mahima Nambiar, too, does a decent job as his wife. Veteran actor Vijayakumar, who plays Arjun’s grandfather Shanmugam, has performed well in a supportive role. rya’s Mahamuni, is reduced to a character with no scope for performance. Sarov Shanmugam’s intentions are good. He wants to tell a happy lighthearted story; all right. But why bring in a message? When will filmmakers realise good intentions don’t make a good film? Arnav Vijay, who makes his debut with Oh My Dog, charms into a per formance as light as it is heartfelt. Simba hogs the show without trying to. If only Oh My Dog ended up doing the same. The background score by Nivas K Prasanna elevates every possible scene and the music will make you take a dip in the emotional scenes. Director Sarov Shanmugan has done a decent job as a director. He picked up a good story that can easily win any heart. It is quite good to see films being made on the emotional attachment of humans with their pets. Such films are very much-needed.
