Nine Fishermen Rescued in a coordinated operation by Indian Navy and Coast Guard
On receiving information around 6 am in the morning about the capsized boat near Manali Island, south of the Pamban Bridge, near Rameshwaram, Coast Guard Station, Mandapam immediately reached to Indian Navy for rescue of the fishermen in the boat.
A Naval helicopter was immediately launched for Search & Rescue(SAR) Operation from Indian Naval Station(INS), Parundu which is located in Ucchipuli, Ramanathapuram. The helicopter sighted the fishing trawler on a coral reef about 8 miles from the coast. The boat was found sinking fast due to possible damage to hull and bad sea conditions.
Four of the nine fishermen were rescued by navy helicopter through winching and taken to Mandapam, and handed over to Coast Guard. Remaining five fishermen were rescued by a fishing boat which reached the area subsequently. Quick communication from Coast Guard and swift action by Indian Navy resulted in rescue of nine lives at sea.
