Chennai, 08 July 2023 : DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi inaugurated the 13th annual Conference of the Clinical Infectious Diseases Society at Chennai Trade Centre today. Dr Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apoll o Hospitals and Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson, MSSRF were Guest of Honours. The three-day conferen ce will be attended by experts from the medical fraternity and will see a vigorous exchange of knowledge and res earch on developments in the Infectious Diseases field.

The conference, an annual affair, will address a variety of critical themes such as hospital infection control and H ospital Acquired Infections, collaboration with other specialties in infection control, critical care in infectious dis eases, the role of vaccination in infection control and case-based approaches. Dr Soumya Swaminathan, well-kn own scientist and Chief of the M S Swaminathan Scientific Research Foundation delivered a plenary lecture on T B in India: Past, Present and Future. The conference also features interactive sessions on exciting topics such as Women in ID: Challenges and Opportunities and for the young ID physician: How to set up a successful ID Depa rtment and many more.

During the inaugural address, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi said, “I congratulate the organizers of this confe rence for bringing together top minds to discuss themes, central to the Infectious Diseases space. Conferences s uch as these and pressures from the medical fraternity will go a long way in eliciting support from the governme nt for enhanced management of IDs. I also call for more investments on the R&D front, to improve preparedness and make our approach truly scientific and supplement the role of our champion doctors during measures such as the pandemic”.

Dr Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, addressing the gathering said, “Infectio us Diseases management is an integral part of what hospitals do on a daily basis. This conference by CIDS is criti cal as it brings together knowledge at the national and global levels and facilitates an exchange of key ideas to en rich ID management and care. The global community hailed India’s contribution during the pandemic. The ID De partment led it from the front and monitored the outcomes. We hail the efforts of our champions and are gratef ul to them for looking after the needs of humanity. Their contributions will remain unmatched. Dr Soumya Swaminathan, renowned scientist and head of the M S Swam inathan Scientific Research Foundation, said, “Infectious Diseases will continue to pose a challenge to mankind. Doctors from the Infectious Diseases spe cialty will once again emerge as champions in the ongoing battle between microbe and man, as the future pande mic is a when and not an if. Therefore, there is a need to develop a national database to en hance preparedness in this regard and I call upon healthcare providers to support this initiative. The role of AI has also become important toda y in developing algorithms to fight such diseases. More awareness programs in India will go a long way in enhan cing approaches the management and care of infectious diseases”.

Dr V Ramasubramanain, President – CIDS, on the occasion said, “In India, we talk about Non-Communicable Dis eases or NCDs. The discourse on infectious diseases is as important because people with NCDs report comorbid ities, which put them at a greater risk of developing infections. Understanding and managing infectious diseases is a critical part of a doctor’s practice, irrespective of whether the case is inpatient or outpatient. This conferen ce will help educate the medical fraternity on the practical aspects of recent developments in the infectious dis eases field.”

The Conference is being held at the Convention Hall, Chennai Trade Centre, from 08 July-10 July 2023.
