KOFI THE GOODFELLOW’S TREE KANGAROO IS A VERY GOOD BOY!
Three-year-old Kofi has now lived at WILD LIFE for one year and to mark the anniversary of his arrival, the dedicated team of Keepers are sharing an insight into the impressive training achievements Kofi has made in that time.
“We developed a unique training program just for Kofi and we’re really proud of his achievements so far,” said Renee Howell, Zookeeper at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.
“Kofi responded very well to the training and is now successfully target trained – which means he willingly steps onto scales – allowing us to weigh him and closely monitor his health. Next, we’ll look to station train him, which means we’ll be able to introduce guest interactions with Kofi, which is very exciting!” added Renee.
Although labelled a ‘kangaroo’, Kofi and other Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroos are one of 14 Tree Kangaroo species that appear and act much differently to the kangaroos you are probably familiar with. They have adapted to life in the trees, they have shorter limbs, they have sharp claws and they can move their back legs independently.
Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroos can also leap up to 18 meters, they are herbivores and sadly, due to hunting and rapid habitat loss, their numbers are dwindling.
International breeding programs are in place to protect and grow the population, including the program at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria where Kofi was the first Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo to be born and raised.
