‘Colours of Kollywood’, a Documentary by the students of MGR Government Film Institute selected for 16th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala
A film by Fourth year Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) students of Tamil Nadu Government MGR Film and Television Institute (Adyar Film Institute), Chennai has made it to the Official Selection of the 16th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) under the Short Documentary Competition Category.
Titled ‘Colours of Kollywood – A Melanin Deficiency’, the film is directed by 20-year-old Paro Salil. She and her team members in BVA have made the Documentary as their fifth semester project.
Talking about the Documentary, Paro Salil said, “Favouritism towards lighter skin tones is embedded in the Indian psyche and Tamil cinema is no exception. Through conversations with industry professionals, artistes, social activists and the common people, this documentary examines the history and practice of differential treatment based on skin colour, especially regarding actresses in Tamil cinema.”
Paro Salil is pursuing her BVA degree in Direction and Screenplay Writing. She hails from Bangalore. She has worked as an Assistant Director in the Advertisement Industry.
She has interviewed the following personalities for the Documentary:

Hariharan (National Award-winning Film Director), Naresh Nil (Ad Film Producer and Photographer), Mia Maelzer (International Award Winning Actor), Kavitha Emmanuel (Spokesperson, DISB Campaign), Manishankar Narayanan (Filmmaker and Film Lecturer), Nila Varman (Content Creator and Filmmaker), Rohini Mani (Artiste), Hrushika (Student, JNU), and Rudreshmaniadiraj (Film Student, FTIT).
‘Colours of Kollywood – A Melanin Deficiency’ has Cinematography by Akshay Paroonon, Audiography by Subramaniya Bharathi, Editing by Gopikrishnan M, DI by Arun Raj H and poster design by Dhakshin M.
‘Colours of Kollywood – A Melanin Deficiency’ directed by Paro Salil is among the 22 short documentary films in various Indian and foreign languages that have been selected for Short Documentary Competition Section at the 16th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK).
