Movie Review-;
Karthikeyan Velu as the Hero is acting as an unknown newcomer. Sanjana Burley is introduced as a woman who knows witchcraft. Charming face. He also shines in acting. In other characters the original village people are cast.Director Ezwar Koravai, who narrated the first half of the film lively, has sought the help of ‘Graphics’ in the second half. Although the film has a lot of new faces throughout, he has handled them effectively. Amidst family drama and action thrillers comes Choo Mandhirakaali. It is a movie that speaks about romance and friendship in the backdrop of some black magic.Written and directed by Eswar Kotravai, the movie has Karthikeyan Velu in th e lead and Sanjana Burli as heroine. The cast includes Kishore Dev, Muhil, Maragatham Sivaprakasam, Niran ja na, Dhananya, V Sridhar among others. Cinematography is by Mohammed Farhan, songs are by Satish Ragh una than and BGM by Navip Murugan.Murugan (Karthikeyan Velu) comes a village known to fo black magic but sp iritual for a purpose. He wants their help for a cause in his native town.
He comes across Sundhara Valli (Sanjana Burli) who has super powers. He falls for her. But fears to express his love. Things take a turn when his relatives comes to know about it. What happens then forms the rest.Choo Man dhirakaali is neither laughable nor is serious about itself.Choo Mandhirakaali opens with a note that says it is de dicated to Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson. Given that these two filmmakers are known for their quirky films, it does set up some expectations. The good news is that the film manages to fulfill quite a few of our expecta tio ns.The plot is definitely imaginative. A village which only has cousins, who, while living together, are also so je alous about each other. As the narrator tells us, farming is their secondary occupation. The first? To bring ruin to their fellow cousins! One young man, Murugan (Karthikeyan Velu) is disturbed by this infighting and with fear the only thing that would put an end to this jealousy, he decides to go to a village of tantriks and get the most powerful of them to his own village.
Posing as a couple, he and his friend Saami (Kishore Dev) enter the place, and realise that the most powerful tantrik there is Sundaravalli (Sanjana Burli). Murugan who is attracted to her must make her fall in love with him to succeed in his plans, but his jealous cousins, who also manage to turn Saami against him, will even give up their own lives to prevent that from happening. Though he does take his own sweet time (a scene involving a house on fire goes on and on despite conveying the pettiness among the cousins), Eswar Kotravai, the film’s writer and dir ector, manages to establish his quirky world convincingly. It is a world filled with tantriks who can levitate, use le mons as mobile phones and even trap the rains inside a coconut. The production design, costumes and the loc ati o n instantly immerse us into this fantastical world. The comic flourishes keep us engaged with the proceedi ngs even when the pace dips. The humour comes in all forms… While we get sight gags, deadpan comedy and situat ional comedy, the dominant comic tool that Eswar Kotravai uses is dark humour.
A couple of running gags work brilliantly. One involves a thief who the tantriks have trapped in the village. He has been mesmerised to believe that he can find an exit and keeps running about at all times to escape from the place. It gets funnier when Murugan’s cousins, who enter the village, decide to follow him to get out of there! The other involves Sundaravalli and Aruvi and Kuruvi, the two girls who are her helpers, trying to convince the mselves that Murugan is actually Lord Murugan himself.However, despite the many interesting things at the con ceptual level, Choo Mandhirakaali remains only an engaging watch.. a mild diversion – even if a pleasant one. And that is because for all the quirkiness in the writing, the film lacks the visual inventiveness of the films of Edgar Wr ig ht and Wes Anderson. The visuals have a TV serial-like quality to them. And the performances are amateu rish. There are times when we are left feeling that we are watching a student film. But the intent to deliver an unusual film shines through these shortcomings and look back on it favourably in the end.Scenes unfold fast and there are attempts at many places to make you laugh.
A little more effort to make the writing tight would have done favour.Both Karthikeyan Velu and Sanjana Burli are okay. Produced by Produced by Annakkili Velu, Annam Medias, it is a time-pass entertainer only if you ready to let go logic.The story revolves around two villages. In one village people are all cousins and resort to black mag ic to bring down each other.Women from the neighbouring village do not get pregnant due to a curse. Karthi key an Velu belongs to the first village and tries to reform the people there.So he goes to the neighbouring village to bring a woman who knows magic to save his villagers. Though this is his debut flick, Karthiekyan Velu has deliv ered a good performance. Sanjana is a girl who knows magic and does her job well.People of the village have act ed in the supporting roles. Director Eeswar Kottravai has banked on humour in the first half and has handled the newcomers efficiently.The movie’s flow is not hindered anywhere. Songs by Sathish Raghunathan are good. BMG by Navid Murugan is adequate. Mohammed Farhan’s cinematography is good.Listening to songs in the music of Sa tish Raghunathan. Navi Murugan may have focused more on the background music.The elegant cinematog rap hy of Mohammad Barhan has added strength to the film.Overall ‘Choo Mantrakali’ is admirable.
