Parents are Rocky fled Sri Lanka which is their home country. They do this in order to escape from war and they land in Tamil Nadu where they seek asylum. Rocky’s father starts committing crimes to fill their stomachs and when he dies, his son steps into his shoes. It’s been a few years since the trailer for ‘Rocky’ sent shivers down the spines of viewers, raising high expectations. Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara have finally brought the film to screen and it remains to be seen if it lives up to its hype.Rocky (Vasant Ravi), a convicted murderer is freed after 17 years and discovers that his mother Mayil (Rohini) has been murdered by his powerful enemy Manimaran (Bharathiraja) and that his sister Amudha (Raveena Ravi) is missing. Rocky is a violent film. Probably it is that one Tamil film where you get to see a lot of violent scenes which were never shown in any other film till now. It is not for the ones who have a weak heart. A lot of mental exhaustion is caused by watching this film and it can leave an impact on you for a long time. Vasanth Ravi portrayed a temperamental computer scientist with remarkably toxic relationship issues in Ram’s “Taramani”. In ‘Rocky’ he plays the title role and has apparently gone to great lengths to achieve the perfect look for the character. Her brooding eyes express inner turmoil while her body is perfect for orchestrating the gore festival in all other stages. He’s also good at awkwardly trying to hook up with the little girl he is to protect for redemption. He could have worked harder to nail down the modulation of the voice that is not in line with the role he is playing. Bharathiraja as the ruthless gangster Manimaran is a revelation and with just his body language and dialogue he convinces that he is indeed the devil personified. Beware of the scene in which he teaches his son who the boss is.
Raveena Ravi is solid in the brief role of the beloved sister who cares but can’t show it. The little girl who plays the primordial role of the angel among the demons is well chosen. The rest of the cast like Ashraf Mallisery as Dhanraj, Jayakumar as Natraj, Ravi Venkatraman as Sami and Rohini as Mayil are all very impressive. What works best about ‘Rocky’ is the way the characterization of the thread is translated onscreen through the choices he makes, the feelings he clings to, and his morality in his highly immoral world. Fortunately, the film doesn’t even deviate a millimeter from its path, and the non-linear narrative helps keep audiences engaged until the end. The film convincingly questions the relevance of God, the inevitability of time, and fate. The depiction of all the skull crushing violence and blood spattering in its true nature of hard work and messed up mental state is remarkable. The only big humor in the whole movie is brilliantly set up from the first scene and paid for in style with a pedophile getting his due from Rocky.
In recent times, Tamil cinema is borrowing ideas from the West such as the struggle for social justice and biopics of inspiring personalities. The downside to “Rocky” is that it is heavily inspired by the Western idea of glorifying violence and filming it in a so-called aesthetic way. Scenes that are too long are grueling and seem to be done just for fun and not as the story demands. Most of the on-screen characters’ emotions fail to connect with audiences not because of alienation from their world, but because of the complacent writing.Vasanth Ravi has done a great performance. He will make you shiver and give you chills in your spine. His performance is top notch and will definitely win your the hearts. Bharathiraja, as usual, has nailed the performance. Camera work of the film is also great and the screenplay is fantastic. Technically, “Rocky” rocks with sound design taking first place, authentically capturing hammers and car hoods crushing skulls, blood oozing from all parts of the body.
Darbukka Siva uses a range of string and skin After a long time, a really violent and edge of the seat kind of thriller has come from the Tamil cinema. Director Arun Matheeshwaran has done a good job. He has written a good script that definitely entertains in parts. He got the best performances out from all the artistes in the film. This week, you can definitely give this film a watch if you are someone who likes spine chilling thrillers.struments to amplify the emotion or rather its absence with the gore festival. Shreyas Krishna uses long and wide shots with sepia for the underworld and black and white for flashbacks wisely. The editing is trendy and in line with the films that inspired this one. Arun Madheshwaran in his beginnings impressed by going to the end of his ballad of violence without any compromise. That he delivered one of the most offbeat films in Tamil cinema remains a fact. His writing could have been better and hopefully his next series of stories will be more local. Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara deserve praise for their first film as producers in their mission to provide Tamil audiences with new viewing experiences.
