Performs Paediatric Liver Transplant on a 4-Month-Old Infant

Chennai, 3rd April 2025: Kauvery Hospi tal, Vadapalani, has successfully perfor med a complex paediatric liver transpla nt on a four-month-old baby, completely free of cost under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insur ance Scheme. This procedure was carrie d out by the hospital’s expert team, mak ing it one of the few centers in Tamil Na du capable of performing paediatric liv er transplants under this initiative.

The infant was diagnosed with a rare ge netic disorder that led to liver failure an d severe jaundice. The baby, weighing o nly 3.5 kg, was brought to Kauvery Hosp ital, Vadapalani, in critical condition. Giv en the urgency of the case, the hospital s wiftly obtained the necessary approvals , including clearance under the Tamil Na du CM Scheme, and completed the trans plant within 10 days.

In an inspiring act of maternal love, the baby’s mother stepped forward as the d onor. A portion of her liver, weighing ap proximately 110 grams, was successfull fully transplanted into her child. The pro cedure was performed by Dr. Swaminat than Sambandam, Director of Liver & M ulti-Organ Transplant Surgery at Kauve ry Hospital, Vadapalani, using a laparosc opic-assisted donor surgery for a minim ally invasive approach. The mother was discharged just three days after surgery, and both mother and child are now in go ood health.

The success of such a challenging proce dure was made possible by Kauvery Hos pital Vadapalani’s highly specialized tea m, which includes Paediatric Intensive C are Specialists, Paediatric Anaesthesiol ologists, Liver Transplant Surgeons, Pae diatric Hepatologists, Radiologists, and I nterventional Radiologists. Due to the baby’s sma ll size, even the 110-gram liver graft had to be accommodated with great difficult y. The post-operative period was equall ly critical, demanding meticulous care fr om intensivists, anaesthetists, and an ex pert nursing team to monitor and mana ge the baby’s recovery under immunosu ppressive therapy.

The successful completion of this paedia tric liver transplant under the Tamil Nad u Chief Minister’s Scheme highlights Ka uvery Hospital Vadapalani’s ability to pr ovide advanced medical care at no cost t to families in need.
