Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU)Chennai Rescues Life of 30-Year-Old Male through Successful Treatment of Giant Hydronephrosis via Keyhole Laparoscopic Surgery
Chennai, March 27, 2024: AHH-owned Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), India’s largest single-specialty hospital network of Urology & Nephrology Care, achieved a significant medical milestone by effectively treating a 30-year-old male with a substantial abdominal mass caused by Giant Hydronephrosis. This rare and life-threatening condition, marked by the progressive accumulation of urine in the kidneys due to blockage, was addressed through a meticulous laparoscopic keyhole surgical procedure.
The patient, who had been grappling with abdominal discomfort and heaviness, finally sought medical attention after years of neglecting the issue since childhood. Upon examination at AINU, doctors discovered that the patient’s right kidney had swelled to an alarming 30-40 centimetres, occupying nearly 75-80% of his abdomen. The urgent need for intervention was crucial to prevent potentially large abdominal mass complications resulting from years of urine retention.
Led by Dr. Arun Kumar.B – Managing Director, Chief Consultant Urologist, AINU Chennai, the surgical team opted for a laparoscopic surgical approach to address the giant hydronephrosis. Approximately 10 litres of accumulated urine was drained during the procedure, alleviating pressure on the surrounding organs. The laparoscopic dissection of the kidney ensured minimal post-operative complications and expedited recovery.”This patient required immediate intervention, with the risk of rupture and severe pressure symptoms looming large if left untreated,” commented Dr. Arun Kumar – Managing Director, Chief Consultant Urologist, AINU Chennai, “Fortunately, with timely intervention and advanced laparoscopic methods, we were able to remove his massively enlarged kidney through keyhole incisions.”Post-surgery, the patient experienced significant relief, with a notable 10-kilogram weight reduction attributed to the abdominal mass removal. Despite the severity of the condition, the patient responded well to treatment and was discharged merely two days after surgery.
Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, Executive Director & Senior Consultant Urologist emphasized, “This case underscores the importance of early detection and treatment of urinary tract disorders. We urge individuals to seek medical attention promptly for any persistent symptoms to avoid potentially life-threatening complications.
“AINU remains at the forefront of innovative urological and nephrological care, utilizing advanced surgical techniques to enhance patient outcomes and improve the overall quality of life.
