RBLBank, one of the leading new-generation private banks has distributed 100 bicycles to underprivileged girl c hildren studying from Class VI to Class IX at Greater Chennai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Pera mbur in Chennai on Tuesday.
The bicycles and school-kits were distributed to the students under the RBL Bank’s flagship CSR initiative `UME ED-1000’ by R V Ramya Bharathi, DIG/Joint Commissioner of Police, North Zone, Greater Chennai Police in the presence of Sathyanarayanan Ganesh, Executive Vice President, Head – South & Goa, RBL Bank, V Shanthi, Education Officer, GCC and other officials.

Welcoming the gathering Sathyanarayanan Ganesh, Executive Vice President, Head – South & Goa, RBL Bank ex plained on how the UMEED-1000 CSR initiative was conceptualized and expanded across India after a small begi nning of Cycling 1000 kms by the bank employees every year as fund raising initiative. The bank had adopted a school in Hyderabad through fund raising programme and later expanded to all over India.
The bank so far distributed bicycles and school-kits to seven cities across India including Chennai and the next destination is Kolhapur in Maharashtra, he added.
Speaking to navjeevanexpress.com, Sathyanarayanan said that apart from this initiative, the bank plans to cond uct financial literacy programmes for school children soon.
He said one of the major reasons for children dropping out of school is distance from their homes. This initiative will provide the much-needed means of transport to increase access to education. The bicycles will help the girl children go to school in a way that is both energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable, he added.
Criteria for selecting the student beneficiaries include their regularity in attending classes, economic back gro und of their families etc.
