Story-;

The film begins in the childhood days of twins, Prabhu and Kathir. Kathir has always been a trouble maker, ea rning the hatred of their father, who is tired of constantly disciplining him. Once, Kathir beats up the neighbor kid. Extremely angry, their father ties Kathir up in the backyard, to a tree. Kathir goes missing overnight, appa rently kidnapped by an unnamed psychotic man. He proclaims himself to be a serial killer preying on his huma n targets, in the jungle. Kathir kills him and returns home. Kathir continues his erratic behavior. He locks Prab hu inside a w ooden box and stabs his father multiple times, killing him. Kathir’s mother does not turn him in to the cops, but instead, seeks the help of a local saint. The saint tells her that the twins cannot co-exist and have to be separate d, somehow, to save one of them. Frustrated and angry, their mother abandons Kathir in a tem ple and flees with Prabhu, despite his request to not leave him there. Years later, Prabhu is a well settled fam ily man with a loving wife and a daughter, Sathya, with whom he is extremely attached to.

He avoids having a second child stating that he does not want to share the love for his only daughter. Sathya, at the age of 12, starts developing symptoms of schizophrenia, which starts disrupting the peace of Prabhu an d his wife. She starts talking to some unknown and invisible person, and often loses sleep. Kathir after repeat edly he aring her daughter talk to herself in the middle of the night, plants a baby monitor in her room, and rec ords her communication with the unknown. She breaks the monitor and throws it out of the room, revealing t hat the un known person asked her to break the monitor, else, he threatened to kill Prabhu. Worried to the co re by the rec ent happenings, Prabhu takes his daughter to a psychiatrist, who tries to extract information fro m Sathya about the unknown person in her room. Sathya reveals that the unknown person is Sonu, a small kid who talks to her of ten. Prabhu and the doctor reject Sathya’s claim to be an imaginary friend syndrome that children sometimes mi stake for a real person. Sathya is adamant that the person is real.

Based on his own research, Prabhu hires a group of young ghostbusters, whom he came across on YouTube. Th e technical team plant cameras, audio recorders, and other high end technical equipment to monitor the para nor mal activity inside Sathya’s room. At the middle of the night, the team finds footprints, using UV lighting, only to find Sathya missing, from her room. The footprints lead back to Sathya’s room, hinting she made a qui ck trip bac k to her room. The door is locked and they start hearing Sathya’s voice again. Terrified and fearing for Sathya’s life, Prabhu tries to break open the door. The door unlocks itself and Sathya begins to talk in Mara thi. The crew helps Prabhu understand and translate Sathya’s communication. Sathya, possessed by Sonu’s vo ice, reveals that Prabhu has to deal with Kathir and put an end to his atrocities that caused Sonu’s death. The psychiatrist realizi ng the impact of the possession, suggests to Prabhu to fulfill the requests of Sonu’s spirit.In another flashback, it is revealed that Kathir, who was abandoned by his mother and brother, struggled to find livelihood.

He was abused by many people, who tried to take advantage of him. Unable to control his thirst for killing, Ka thir ended up killing all of them. Eventually, Kathir found the love of his life, Madhuri, a deaf and mute woman. The y married and settled in a remote cabin in the forest, with twins of their own, Sonu and Manu. His family’s peace was disturbed, when Manu came across his father’s psychopath nature. He hid himself in his father’s je ep and followed him to document and vlog the hunting of wild animals, by Kathir. He saw his father killing a bu nch of tourists, who disrespected him in front of his kids, over a petty issue of marijuana. Earlier, Kathir refuse d to provide ma rijuana to the tourists. Kathir explained to Manu that he will not be able to understand his ur ge to kill and reques ted him to hide this fact from the rest of the family.Eventually, Manu told Madhuri and So nu about Kathir’s true nature. The family’s peace was again disturbed, when Madhuri wanted to abandon Kath ir and tried to flee with the twins. She even assured Kathir that she will not go to the cops.

Kathir, in the fear of losing his family, again, locked up the twins and Madhuri. One day, when Kathir was drun k, Madhuri tried to escape with the twins. Their plan backfired when Kathir saw them. Despite her pleadings t hat she will not report Kathir, he refused to let her go, with the twins. In the ensuing arguement, Kathir ended up ki lling Madhuri with his knife. Sonu, his elder son and twin, was also killed in the altercation. Manu was ter rified an d taken back by Kathir.The psychiatrist, Guna, Prabhu, and Sathya travel to Chopda, a North Indian hi ll town bac ked by huge acres of lush green forests. Sathya only responds when referred to or called as Sonu. S athya’s ment al health eventually starts deteriorating. Prabhu takes Sathya to Sonu’s school. Upon finding Ma nu, she tries to talk to him, but he starts running away in fear. She speaks in Marathi and signals in sign langu a ge, gaining the tru st of Manu. Sathya promises to save Manu from Kathir, with his uncle, Prabhu’s help. Manu asks Sathya and the o thers to meet him later that night at his home and cautions them to be extremely caref ul, as Kathir knows the ju ngle, in and out, and has exemplary hunting skills.

Prabhu and Kathir eventually meet up after a long time. Prabhu confesses that he knows about Kathir’s urge to kill. He pleads Kathir to let go of Manu and says that he will not report any of these happenings, to the aut horitie s. Upon being highly adamant, Kathir and Prabhu get into a fight. Prabhu, lacking the combat and hun ting skills, is injured heavily by Kathir and is about to be killed. Sathya, possessed by Sonu, exhibits her archery skills and hu rts Kathir to stop him from killing Prabhu. Manu threatens Kathir that he will jump down the cliff, if Kathir does not stop. Prabhu grabs Kathir and they both fall off the cliff, to their death. Sonu leaves Sathya’s body, as a result. Prabhu comes back climbing the cliff top. Prabhu claims that everything has been sorted out and that Kathir is d ead. Manu, who is extremely confident of Kathir’s survival skills, asks Prabhu, who has re turned back, amongst the two of them.   It is not revealed who has returned – Prabhu or Prabhu, possessed by Kathir’s spirit. Prabhu op ens his eyes as the film ends.

The film revolves around twins Kathir and Prabhu.  Among them, Kathir is so rude, arrogant and troublesome th at his parents consider him a cursed child.  Some unexpected events separate them for 20 years.  Nowadays, Pra bhu is well settled and lives happily with his daughter and wife.  After a family vacation, Prabhu’s (Satya) daught er is possessed by an evil spirit. Her health and mental condition will be seriously affected and suicidal tendenci es will put her life in danger. Prabhu will be deeply hurt seeing his daughter’s condition and no matter what he wi ll decide to save his daughter at any cost. Selvaraghavan and Dhanush have come together after Mayakkam Enna and the brothers in Naane Varuven present a tale of twin siblings. Only, unlike the real-life relationship, the on e in their film is filled with danger, trauma, physical and mental abuse. To be honest, films by Selvaraghavan starr ing Dhanush have always excelled in capturing the dark recesses of a human mind. In Selvaraghavan’s directorial debut Kaadhal Kondein starring Dhanush, they explored the dark side of posses siveness and obsession.

In Pudhupettai, the two of them painted the town red by delving deep into the life of a thug. In Mayakkam En na, the two of them explored the depths of depression. Now, they explore the darkness that could exist in a rel ation ship between siblings. The film Naane Varuvean is directed by Selvaraghavan and written by Dhanush. The movi e is produced and distributed by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under V Creations and in Kerala Aashirvad Cine mas handles the distribution. Yuvan Shankar Raja composes the music, Bhuvan Srinivasan does the editing an d Om Prakash handles the cinematography for the film. With a running time of 122 minutes, the film is curre n tly running in th eatres with a censor certificate of U/A. Research papers suggest that psychopaths show sym ptoms of their condi tion as a child. They torture animals and revel in the pain that they cause their pet project. Kathir, in Selvaragha van-directorial Naane Varuven, is one such psychopath. He lights the skirt of a girl in the neighbourhood on fire and does it purely for cheap thrills. He refuses to apologize for his mistake and holds gr udges long enough to ex act revenge, and this includes his family members.

He stabs his father, locks his twin brother Prabhu in a storage trunk and has no qualms about his actions. Textb ook actions of a psychopath really. Unfortunately, his widowed mother decides to abandon him instead of fin d ing a way to treat him, or leave him to the authorities. We saw some incredible films when Selvaraghavan and Dh anush teamed up for ‘Tulluvato Ilamai’, ‘Kathal Konden’ and ‘Puthupettai’. Those films were highly acclai m ed and became box-office hits. So people started putting faith in Dhanush and Selvaraghavan’s combo. So like everyone else, when ‘Nane Varavan’ was announced, I expected a different film. The music of Yuvan Shankar Raja, the dire ction from Selvaraghavan and the script from Dhanush made my expectation higher. Therefore to be honest, ‘Na nne Varuvean’ is a film with a unique concept set against the backdrop of a familiar set of tw in brothers. I’m sure the movie will entertain everyone and I’m happy to say that the Selvaraghavan-Dhanush-Yuvan combo has won and has once again worked out.

What makes Naane Varuven really interesting is how it blends fantasy and science to propel the plot forward. Pr abhu grows up into a responsible father, one who continues to be affected by his childhood, but one who do esn’ t let his trauma direct his life. There is initially no news from Kathir, on the other hand. It is as if he has dis appeare d from Prabhu’s life. He only exists in fleeting moments of Prabhu’s flashbacks. Until Prabhu’s daught er returns from a vacation as a changed person. Interestingly enough, the moments in the run-up to this exact moment are light and sweet. It is as if the makers want the audience to get ready for a misfortune to strike Pr abhu’s family. Th e restlessness is apparent, and after Prabhu’s wife mentions how uneasy she had felt in their daughter’s room, th e tone of the entire film shifts. It goes from light and vibrant to grey and heavy.The atmosp here and premise of th e film ‘Naane Varuvean’ are fascinating, I enjoyed the vibe of this film. The horror mood, the thrilling scenes, the supernatural happenings, the crimes and the interesting twin brother storyline had pr ovided me with an enjoya ble experience.

The twin brother stories are now common these days but in ‘Naane Varuvean’ the director Selvaraghavan and w riter Dhanush had brought some interesting concepts, it was unique and looked fresh. The mood that this m ovie gives will make you thrilled and the way the movie is unfolding will also amuse you. While watching this fil m I wa s getting a feeling of excitement and curiosity about what is next and what will happen to them, so the experien ce of ‘Naane Varuvean’ was delightful. There are some flaws, but those flaws didn’t make the overall quality bad, I’m sure no one will be disappointed after watching ‘Naane Varuvean’. The first major positive fact or of this film is the storyline, the plot of this film has successfully got some ingredients to entertain us. The sto ry of the film ha ppens between a twin brother and it’s common but the concepts like supernatural and psych ological elements w ere blended in the right place and Selvaraghavan executed it authentically for the film. Th e screenplay was also effective, I was able to connect with the emotions of the central characters. The occurre nces in the screenplay and the subplots which unfolded in the screenplay were making the movie more grippi ng.

The scenes where the twin brothers meet after a long gap and the circumstances through which they meet ma de my mind crazy. It’s because the placement of scenes was accurate, the proper connection was given for the next scene, and we won’t feel an incompleteness till the climax. Seriously, this movie had a stunning first half, everythi ng in the first half was making me enthusiastic but the second half missed the momentum and ended up in a dece nt manner. The wow factor found in the first half was missing in the second half. The second half a nd climax of th e movie should have been made better, the screenplay lacked to give an impact. Beyond the m ix of fantasy and fi ction, however, Naane Varuven is underwhelming at large with some impressive mome nts interspersed just eno ugh to keep us from getting bored. One of the highlight moments in the film occurs when Kathir, who is settled in Chopta as an adult, shows his true colours to his family. That moment is raw with his fa mily’s fears, his pain at his inability to hide his true self long enough and Kathir’s reminders that he had been a bandoned once before. Even as Kathir moves in darkness, their enough light surrounding him to highlight that he had truly become a monster.

One that wanted to believe that he deserved a family. The concepts and ideas brought by Dhanush to the scri pt are convincing, it never felt exaggerated or dramatic. The supernatural theme was crammed with psycholog ical angles and it pursued a smooth flow. It didn’t get diverted, the core subject was fresh, the central characte rs we re given equal importance and how the various incidents affect the life of the hero and villain makes the storyli ne more compelling. Sadly other supporting characters in the film were not given space, the characters of Indhu ja, Prabhu and Yogi Babu looked shoddy. The hunting of supernatural energy towards the end of the fi rst half wa s brilliantly executed by Selvaraghavan. There I was able to see the brilliance of Selvaraghavan, wh ose clever wa y of direction had given me a big impressionThe first half focused on the life of one of the main c entral character s, his family, his work, his happiness, and his bond with his daughter was portrayed effectivel y. Those scenes had given a good feel, as director Selvaraghavan had produced some good scenes of family lov e and sentiments, so I was able to rectify the emotions.

Shortly after the movie tracked into a thriller backdrop, the totality of the movie started to change. I was sens ing something different and was not wrong because the film was constantly showing riveting ideas of supernat ural a nd psychological aspects. I was wondering whether it was supernatural or psychological and I loved that confuse d feeling of my mind. The interval block was terrific, had blown my mind and I was also shocked by see ing the pre sentation of that scene. It was directed amazingly by Selvaraghavan, the mood of fear and horror w as felt all ove r. The entrancing interval twist had given the hope of something big but unfortunately, the secon d half didn’t mai ntain the quality of the first half.  He did not care about imprisoning people in the name of lov e, and until the very end, he is painted as nothing but a monster. Just as it should be. This also serves as one of the problems in the fil m. Despite being a psychological thriller, the film moves at a snail pace. Fortunately, the short runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes, and a clean screenplay ensure that the film doesn’t become too much of a drag.

The second half was concentrating more on the negative character, things went more engrossing after the re vea ling of the subplot. The subplot was portraying his emotions and secrets, also the way he lives and his fami ly angle was shown effectively. Those parts were nicely written by Dhanush the flashback scenes had given an influenc e. Proper detailing was given to the negative character, his struggles, his anger and his hate had the de pth to hook us and those scenes haven’t given any lag. Till the climax everything was perfect, the screenplay m aintained th e grip and the direction of Selvaraghavan followed the right momentum. Towards the ending the movie started to get off-balance, felt like the makers were rushing to end the film. The climax looked ordinary, there is an impo rtant scene where the twin brothers meet after a long time and that was supposed to create a big impact but th at scene was made poorly. I kept on wondering why Selvaraghavan had opted for a simple-mannered climax, no wow factors were seen. The ending was good but I couldn’t find the passionate touch of Selvaraghavan, also the way it ended lacked a punch.

The film leaves a trail for a possible second part but the screenplay needs to be stronger. So I can guarantee yo u that the engaging way of direction by Selvaraghavan and the story written by Dhanush is worth your time an d money.  The movie has the casting of Dhanush, Indhuja Ravichandran, Yogi Babu, Prabhu, Elli AvrRam, Shelly Kishor e and many more. As the hero and as a villain Dhanush had done a massive performance, and the energ y we cans ee in his performance was huge. The way he acted out and the way he expressed the emotions in his character w as outstanding. The two different character shades and the two types of behaviour were carefully handled by Dh anush without any errors. The facial expressions were impressive, we will be able to see the de meaning emotion s of his two-character. The innocence and the anger were expressed authentically, as a dual role he maintained t he personality of the two characters correctly. The dialogue delivery of Dhanush was won derful, timing issues were never felt and his voice also had the power to contrive us.

The fight sequence looked good and the costume style looked precise, and the mannerism of the two twin bro thers was also easily undertaken in the right manner. In the emotional scene, the acting of Dhanush was top-cl ass, especially when he cries we will be able to sense his natural acting. Indhuja Ravichandran didn’t have eno ugh sp ace to perform so the performance looked normal. Yogi Babu was ok, some scenes brought humour but his chara cter was written out poorly. Prabhu as the psychologist was average, his character was also lacking i n-depth so n othing much to mention. Shelly Kishore did a notable performance as the mother, her emotional scenes and the acting looked natural. Elli AvrRam looked gorgeous and her mother’s character was good. She performed well an d the bondage of a caring mother was able to be seen in her performance. The music for the film is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja which includes the background score. The soundtrack consists of four songs and the songs were nice to hear. The track “Veera Soora” is my favourite among the tracks, the energy and vibe which the song gives while listening is huge.

Also, the visuals of the song in the film were superb, the action sequences had the song more vibrant. Overall, Na ane Varuven has its moments, and the exploration of Kathir’s character is intriguing As a whole, however, t he fil m needed to be a tad bit more dynamic. Especially the way they arrive at a resolution to the central confli ct is jus t laden with unnecessary weight.   The lyrics of Selvaraghavan was also matching the song and the voi ce of Yuvan Shankar Raja and Muthu Siripi made it flawless. The song “Rendu Raja” was superb because of the voice and lyri cs of Dhanush. The song maintained a nice mood of thrill and tension, and the lyrics were giving t he hint of who is the hero and villain. The song “Pinju Pinju Mazhai” was melodious, and the visuals brought t he love and affect ion of a father and daughter relationship. The vocals of Sid Ram had given a nice pleasant fe el and Yugabharathi had given the right words for the song. The background score tuned by Yuvan Shankar Ra ja is one of the major pl us factors of this film. His background tunes helped the film to boost the mood.

I’m sure that the tunes will engage everyone and will attract them to the scenes. Every BGM was made accord ing to the scene and the tunes synched perfectly with every scene. The building of tension and eagerness drive s all t hrough the film, so to give that feel Yuvan Shankar Raja had given some unique set of tunes and it came out well. The climax was not satisfying for me but the background scores in those areas impressed me. The sce ne just before the interval block was mesmerizing, I was shocked by the stunning visuals. In those scenes, the sense of excitement was heavily passed by the background score. It was an important crucial scene in the film and with out ma king it dull to give more impact the composer Yuvan Shankar Raja had come up with some ele ctrifying tu nes. Th ose tunes were thrilling, scary and amusing at the same time, so I will say that Yuvan Shan kar Raja clearly under stood what this film demanded and had given a proper and appropriate set of backgro und music. The technical q uality of the film was impressive, and the cinematography of Om Prakash was out standing.

He had given the right visuals and the various types of shots were remarkable. The lighting methods were bri lliant, and the mood of fear and the situation of the supernatural premise were effectively captured. The ligh ting m ethods gave more vibrancy to the supernatural scenes, and the flat where the central characters reside had the setup of perfect lighting. That darkish lighting method and the colour grading had the perfect combina tion and it looked matching on the screen. The outdoor visuals of the hill station and the living places of the vill ain we re pr operly shot by the cinematographer. The forest hunting visuals were amazing, and the fight moves of Dhanush w ere also caught steadily. The close-up frames of Dhanush in the emotional scenes consisted of various angles. Th ose different placements of the camera and the close-up frames helped to showcase his na tural way of acting.Th e scenes in which some groups of youngsters come to rectify supernatural presence had the best shots and visua ls.  The red lighting, the sudden camera movements and the placement of the camera helped to give a big impact.

The editing of Bhuvan Srinivasan was fine, the transition of the scene didn’t have a mismatched feeling. I am ha ving mixed opinions on colour grading because for some scenes it was perfect but for some scenes, it was not matching. For the indoor scenes, the colour grading was fine but for the outdoor scenes, the dark grey tone wa s notth at accurate. The set arrangement by the art department deserves special mention, the mood and the pr emise of t he scary atmosphere was seen authentically throughout.  So overall I enjoyed watching ‘Naane Varu vean’, the vi be and atmosphere of this film were captivating, I liked everything until the climax. The supernatu ral scenes in th e film were wonderfully executed and the added psychological elements made it more tempti ng. The hero-villain play of twin brothers was interesting and the energetic performance of Dhanush will blow your mind. The script by Dhanush and the direction by Selvaraghavan have got the components to attract us and I am sure that the mo vie won’t disappoint anyone. Still, the climax was average and the second half was ru shed, but the first half was excellent. Therefore, to conclude, if you love to watch a different kind of thriller wi th a supernatural backdrop th e movie ‘Naane Varuvean’ will be a good choice.
