An ambitious youngster, who aspires to become an entrepreneur, sets out to find the truth behind the money mi ssing from the post office where his father works as a postmaster. He takes up the initiative to avoid his father ge tting arrested by the cops. However, he realizes after a point that going in search of the huge amount of money will benefit him as well in one way or the other. Will he be able to save his father’s reputation? Will he be able to accomplish his dreams of becoming an entrepreneur?

Kollywood has been witnessing a slew of heist dramas in the recent years; debutant Praveen’s Pothanur Thabal Nilayam is the latest to join the list. Unlike the movies which have been released in the genre, its story which is set in early 90s revolves around a post office in Pothanur village. Praveen, the technical director of Superstar Raj inikanth’s Kochadaiyaan debuts as filmmaker and actor with the movie ‘Pothanur Thabal Nilayam’. The movie is premiering on AHA Tamil OTT app from May 27, 2022, onwards. The film, set against the backdrops of the 90s revolves around a post-office heist plot laced with thrill and mystery.Director Praveen, who is also the protag onist of the film, essays a character by the same name.
Having completed his studies in computer engineering in the USA, he wishes to become an entrepreneur in his home town. Though business plans associated with anything pertaining to computers are considered risky by o thers considering the lack of knowledge about the same in the 90s, he goes ahead and applies for a bank loan. The story is set in the 90s across the sub-urban town of Pothanur,(one of the most unknown places to the cur rent generation, but a boon for the ones born in the 60s and 70s as it owns the esthetical beauty of British co lonization). The film revolves around Praveen (Praveen), who earnestly wants to enjoy a Billionaire life, by be coming a tycoon.
His aspirations to invest in the computer business in the 90s sounds like a good plan for him, but an alien and a not-so-favorable business plan for the banks and loan creditors. While his days are filled with so much of disa pp ointments, and the lady luck almost knocking on the doors and disappearing, he is bound to a do-or-die sit ua tion, when a huge amount of 7Lac Post Office money is stolen from his father, who is a staff there. Meanwhile, his father Venkata Raman (Jagan Krish), an honest and a dedicated postmaster, gets the shock of his life after he finds that a huge amount of money is missing from his post office. Quite startled at the unexpected set back, the future seemed so bleak to him.
He decides to inform about the issue to his senior officer and makes up his mind to surrender before cops after taking responsibility for the theft. With just 36 hours left, Praveen has to chase the unknown miscreants behind the burglary and has to save his father’s skin. Will he make it? Does his dream of kick-starting his dreams come true? This forms the crux of a story laced with lots of twists and turns. However, Praveen consoles him and req uests him to grant him permission to find the truth behind the mysterious money missing case. He sets out to crack the issue by collecting details of his father’s colleagues with the help of his girlfriend Mridula (Anjali Rao) and Sanga (Venkat Sundar).
Very soon, Praveen realizes that finding the money is as important for his future as his father’s reputation. The filmmaker deserves applause for bringing an unusual backdrop for a heist drama. The highlight of the film is the manner in which the screenplay has been treated; its pace remains constant from the beginning to end and am ple detailing helps viewers connect with every little, but relevant things that unleash after the plot gets thicker. The earnest efforts of the team are very much appreciable. Praveen, being the technical director, seems to have very planned the entire project and filmed it on a limited budget, but with a good output. The first thing to steal our attention is the art department.
It’s great to see that the setting is so neat and precise, that we don’t find any artificial elements in art or set wo rks. The way, Praveen, takes his time to establish the characterizations and conflict is pretty appreciable. In fact, the first half is slightly slow, but still, we aren’t pushed into the zone of boredom. Apparently, the intermission ins tills in us, a huge lease of expectations that the second hour is going to be more thrilling and engrossing. Howev er, the momentum remains the same, except for some thrills. The small character traits assigned to seemingly uni mportant characters stand out as the story progresses. Though there isn’t anything remarkable about the filmm aker choosing the 90s for the story to unravel, he manages to take the audience three decades ago by effective u sage of elements that evoke nostalgia.
Praveen, as the protagonist, is okayish in the role; he has tried his best, but a proven actor could have single-ha ndedly shouldered the film. Jagan Krish excels in his role; it is his convincing portrayal which makes us relate to the plot. Sukumaran Sundar’s cinematography is adequate and Praveen’s editing is neat. Tenma’s background score could have been more effective.Though cinematic liberties have been taken at a few instances, the film maker ensures that he doesn’t cross the line. The way in which logical loopholes have been taken care of with ample spoon-feeding could have been avoided in a few scenes. Despite a smart screenplay which offers only a little to complain, the lack of wow factor is evident throughout the film.
The twists and turns, however, complement the drawbacks. However, it can be justified by the fact that the sto ry is set in the 90s, where the present-day gimmicks of drones, gadgets, and cheating technical elements can’t be used to escalate the feeling of thrill. However, we do start feeling that the screenplay could have been a little gri pping with a reduced running length. Nonetheless, the climax looks commendable, and the way, Praveen tries to extend the story into the second half with four major conflicts as the main premise gives an assurance that he wo uld rectify the little flaws, and deliver a promising sequel. This crime drama has its moments, thanks to en gaging making style and intriguing screenplay. But the lack of exciting elements spoil its chances to become a rollicking thriller.
