A not-so-smooth relationship between a robot and an old man turns into an inseparable bond, eventually—as the latter remains blissfully unaware of the risks that the former would cause.Review: Subramani (Ravikumar) dressed in veshti, walks through the streets with his caretaker robot, Kuttappa (also) in a veshti and a towel on his shoulder. The bond they share is endearing. But, this wasn’t the case, initially. Subramani’s son Aditya (Thar shan) gets a job in Germany. He doesn’t think twice to chase his dreams. Subramani, a sentimental father, insists that Aditya stay with him so that he looks after the farming. Aditya refuses to budge and finds a way to depute a help. A couple of women (domestic workers) couldn’t fit into Subramani’s universe. They leave. Aditya’s effort ends in vain. Finally, he brings in a robot. Not only does he program it for his father, but also convinces him that this would be of immense use to him someday. Aditya leaves for Germany.
Loneliness engulfs Subramani, as he slowly adapts himself to the environment. Now, Kuttappa has almost be co me his son. That’s how Subramani treats Kuttappa. Subramani falls ill; Kuttappa takes complete care of him. Su bramani now trusts Kuttappa more. He doesn’t realise it’s a man-made machine. Films with robots are usually sci-fi action vehicles, but in Koogle Kuttappa, you see a humanistic drama. The villagers want selfies with Ku tta ppa. Easily, the robot becomes a star here. Subramani is old-fashioned and does not even use a mixer or grinder in the kitchen, but now, he is extremely comfortable hanging out with a robot. Scenes that depict these emotions are beautifully etched out. But what doesn’t work for me is the love story (between Tharshan and Losliya’s chara cters) that runs, in parallel. The makers could have done away with it because it adds little to the plot. Instead, I would have loved to see the romantic track between Ravikumar and his longtime crush, Pavithra.
Certain scenes reminded me of Power Paandi—though—in particular; searching for the old love on Facebook, an d sending messages on chat.’ Actor’ Ravikumar does far more for Koogle Kuttappa than the filmmaker-duo does. Ravikumar is the heart and soul of the film. In the original (Android Kunjappan Version 5.25), there was a lot of humour; both situational, and in dialogues. There was drama, as well. Here, in Tamil, the dialogues are less funny and verbose. As usual, Yogi Babu’s character is being body-shamed. Also, the comedian indulges in his usual bra nd of insult comedy. For instance, he calls someone, “vellai poondu thalaiyaa”, which fails to evoke even a chuc kl e.There are quite a few logical loopholes too. But let’s not get into that. The narrative does lose its pace in the se cond half. But I am glad how Sabari and Saravanan steered clear of ‘preaching to the audience’, although the film tells a tested theme in Tamil cinema—the importance of taking care of the elderly.

Darshan lives with his father KS Ravikumar in the Coimbatore district. He wants to finish his engineering and go abroad. But his father KS Ravikumar blocks Darshan’s wish. Darshan convinces his father and goes to Germany. Also, he is assisted by a robot that is being tested by his company to take care of his lonely father. KS Ravikumar, who initially hates the robot, at one point falls in love with the robot and sees it as his own son. For some years now, Tamil cinema has been plagued with a significant void — the shortage of fine supporting actors. In truth, th at is one avenue the place our neighbours, the Malayalam movie trade have been revelling in. Apparently, it’s Ko ogle Kuttappa, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam movie, Android Kunjappan, that has helped unearth the fanta stic actor in director KS Ravikumar.
Whereas he did make a powerful flip in sure movies, it’s in Koogle Kuttappa that we see the powerhouse perfor mer in KS Ravikumar. Because the hot-headed Subramani, the director-turned-actor effortlessly eases into the position whose success depends closely on the chemistry he shares with the humanoid robotic. Ravikumar is the proper foil for the robotic that can’t reciprocate feelings. With out the necessity for dialogue, he successfully se lls the love for the robotic. In truth, the position virtually looks like an extension of KS Ravikumar’s actual self. Th is movie is the official remake of the Android Kunchappan version 5.25 movie which was released in Malayala m in 2019. But, did this film have the impact that it did? Isn’t it Let’s see here. Many would have thought that Dar shan and Laslia were the hero and heroine.
But, at the same time, those who saw the Malayalam version knew that their character was Dummy Bees. The real hero of this film is K.S. It’s Ravikumar. KS Ravikumar refuses to send the robot back to the company boss af ter the test is over. Thus, Darshan returns to India to pick up the robot. Did KS Ravikumar return the robot in the end? Isn’t it Is the rest of the story of the film? KS Ravikumar, who plays the father, has carried the whole story on his shoulders. He expresses his experiential acting to the extent that it is not criticized anywhere. Darshan, who plays the son, has shown as much acting ability as he can. Laslia, who played the heroine, has done the job she was given. Yogibabu’s comedy is not taken seriously. He has kept his assistant directors and has captured and acted out a story for himself in his own production.
Jambavan director K.S. Although Ravi Kumar played well, the fact of the matter is that he could not match Sur aj’s performance in Malayalam in many places. Regardless of being a retelling, there are particular touches in Ko ogle Kuttappa that appear extra profound when seen in our personal language. As an illustration, Subramani typ ically complains that his son Adithya (Tharshan) is just too busy to scatter the ashes of his mom’s stays. Even though Big Boss Darshan tries to play the same role, the acting comes to him, and runs away without stic ki ng. The emotional connection between father and son in the Android Kunchappan movie is stressful. But, here it is the artificial appearance that has caused the biggest problem for the film. Actress Kenti Sirdo will play a Japa nese woman in the movie Android Kunchappan. Technology, as befits the film, would have differentiated there as Kunchappan, the Japanese female heroine in the title. But, since the Japanese girl is not available here, the Sri Lankan girl Laslia is cast as the heroine. The second film starring Laslia as the heroine has been released follo wi ng the Friendship movie. But he has no scope for this either. Zibran’s music has added some strength to the film. Keeps enjoying the background music. Arvi’s cinematography is special.
KS Ravikumar has produced and acted in the critically acclaimed Malayalam film ‘Android Kunchappan’ directed by Ratheesh Balakrishnan in Malayalam under the title Google Kuttappa in Tamil. The robot combination scenes with him are comforting for the film. Sabari and Saravanan, who worked as assistant directors to director KS Rav ikumar, are directing the film. They have created the screenplay by showing the characters around without telli ng the story straight.
