Selfie is a film written and directed by Mathi Maran, produced by D Sabareesh under the banner DG Film Comp any and distributed by Kalaipuli S Thanu’s V Creations. The film has GV Prakash, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Varsha Bollamma playing the lead roles while Vidya Pradeep, Sangili Murugan, DG Gunanidhi, Vagai Chandra se kar, Subramaniam Siva and others play supporting roles. The film has music scored by GV Prakash himself. Kanal (GV Prakash) is an engineering student who has been forcefully admitted into an infamous college by his father.
After getting to know that brokering seats for commission can make one rich quickly, he gets into the busines s with his friends and rises among the ranks pretty quickly. He gets into deep trouble at the same pace, and one of his best friends dies. Selfie had a lot of expectations because it was directed by Vetrimaaran’s associate Math imaran and the film’s core subject dealt with the education mafia. Selfie has dealt with an interesting and rele vant topic that has never been seen before in Tamil cinema in detail. The dark side of private educational institutions. How he gets out of this mess forms the rest of the plot.

The film follows Kanal, a country youngster played by gv prakash Kumar, who mistakenly enrols at a B-grade en gineering institution in the city. The liquor-sipping student is introduced to the clandestine world of college adm issions rackets when he discovers that his father (played by the brilliant Vagai Chandrasekhar) paid a signifi cant amount as “gift” to obtain him the seat. Soon after, he becomes a student broker, luring wealthy parents into sec uring seats for their children at medical schools. Kanal quickly develops a bond with classmate Nazir (DG Gunani thi), and the two team up to take on the system with a sense of humour, making quick cash and rapid trou ble in the process. Selfie is a Tamil action thriller film directed by debutant Mathi Maran and produced by DG Fil m Co mpany.
The film stars G. V. Prakash Kumar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Varsha Bollamma, with a supporting cast inc luding Vidya Pradeep, Vagai Chandrasekhar, Sangili Murugan, and Subramaniam Siva. The film’s music is comp osed by G. V. Prakash Kumar himself, with cinematography handled by Vishnu Rangasamy and editing done by S. Elayaraja. Ravi Varma, an alumnus of the college who is played menacingly by gautham Vasudev Menon, is the leader of the racketeering gang. Ravi, like Kanal, has his own set of opponents working to bring down his system, including the management chairman’s son-in-law, who is attempting to unseat the henchman. Thanks to editor S Elayaraja, the film’s action sequences have a slickness to them.
Jump cuts add to the narrative flow and frequently keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Mathi Maran, a for mer colleague of Vetri Maaran, like Vetri Maaran, enjoys including raw action sequences into his films. G.V. Prak ash has once again given a very compelling performance as a live wire boy favoring the negative side. He has ta ckled all the emotions with ease be it his ruthless streak when cheating or the sentimental scenes involving his father and Nazir’s mother. Gautham Vasudev Menon as Ravi Varma is outstanding. He kills it with his class and style and looks every bit the part. Everyone’s performance was sensational. The film does not look just enterta ining but also educates by dispelling myths and perceptions. The major flaw of the movie was predictable at the end nearing the climax.
While the main characters deliver strong performances, the supporting cast, particularly Vagai Chandrasekhar, shines in emotional passages. While the first half of the film is enjoyable, the second half has a few flaws. As much as the film tries to investiga te an unknown topic, it occasionally falls behind its initial pace—this is especially noticeable in the climax, when the much-anticipated loose ends are tied up with hasty moments. As a subject idea, Selfie delves into a subject that is rarely in the public eye, leave alone in films. Mathi Maran deserves credit for not only taking it up but also keeping the screenplay as racy as possible so as to not miss audience interest. However, he misses out on a few counts, especially because of a ‘filmi first half’ that features a romance that has no place here, and performances that do not always hit the right note. But the major It explores the world of college-seat brokering and how innoc ent parents are being cheated by the big system that also involves the college management.
A major plus of the movie is the screenplay and writing. On the technical side, the film is very strong in the music and editing department. The jump cuts from Elaya Raja were impressive. The major place of the movie is editing which keeps the movie pace. GV. Prakash’s raw background score elevates the film to a high standard. Vishnu Ra ngaswamy’s cinematography was good.Overall, Selfie is a good movie with strong content. The movie is highly engaging and educative at the same time. The content is fresh and never seen before. Do watch it in theatres.
