Movie Review-;

Arya and Sayyesha who are married in real life play lead roles in the film and that builds some excitement. Ho wever, Sayyesha makes a very brief appearance, as the majority of the story revolves around Arya and the teddy bear. Arya fits the role very well. His serious demeanour and matured performance power the film. Sayyesha is good in her brief role.The film has a good premise as a story like this has been rarely explored in Indian Cinema and particularly in South Indian Cinema. The basic plotline is fresh and interesting.While fresh and exciting st ories like these look good on paper, they demand exceptional filmmaking skills if they are to shape up well on the screen. Sadly, Teddy neither has a good screenplay nor does it have any emotional connect. Many scenes look silly, owing to poor writing and way too convenient narrative.Shiva (Arya) is someone who finds it tough to invite new relationships into his life. He loves being in solitude and believes that no relationships have a happy ending.

Things change when this adorable talking teddy enters his life. He develops a beautiful friendship with it and le arns the teddy’s backstory. The two, later, set out on a journey to expose medical crimes, which has put many li ves in danger.While this makes for a really good first half, a few minutes into the second half, we realise that the makers have packed all interesting elements in the first itself leaving little for later. The second half is all about how Shiva and his teddy expose an organ trafficking group, located in Azerbaijan, despite all odds.Scenes betw een Arya and the talking teddy bear are delightful to watch. Motion capture (mo-cap) technology has been used to bring the teddy bear character to life and it is neatly done. Teddy is the only second Tamil film to use this tec hnology after Rajinikanth’s period film Kochadaiiyaan (2014). The special effects are one of the highlights of the film. Imman’s foot-tapping numbers and background score support the film big time. Songs like En Iniye Than im aiye and Nanbiye are placed well and help us connect with the emotions of the teddy bear.Sakshi Agarwal’s pe rformance as a psychiatrist is quite impressive.

Though she appears only for a short duration, her screen presence is refreshing and is something to watch out for. She is a natural and is apt for the role.Director Maghizh Thirumeni, who has earlier worked with Arya in Me aghamann, has made his acting debut with this one. He plays the role of a doctor in the film and presents a tough fight to the hero in the second half. However, director Shakti Soundar Rajan could have added more details to his character given that he is the main antagonist in the film. When the audience was waiting to see a powerful con versation between Arya and Magizh Thirumeni’s characters that could possibly unravel many mysteries, all we got is a fight scene in the parking lot which is done-to-death in Tamil cinema. The film becomes predictable at the half-way mark. The action scenes, which was shot entirely in Azerbaijan, seem a little rushed and has very less de tailing. However, despite its flaws, Shakti’s film is worth a watch for all the earnest efforts.Sathish and Karun akaran have also done a neat job.

And last but certainly not least, Arya’s impressive understated performance helps the viewer relate comfortably to the character. He looks excellent on screen and his chemistry with his wife Sayyeshaa has worked really well. It makes us root for both the characters from the very first scene. Overall, Teddy is a satisfying thriller, which co uld have been made better.There is one particular scene in the film where the male lead threatens one of the go ons to cut open his nerve which is connected to his brain and then transfer the date from his brain to a computer. Such is the kind of silliness infused into this script.Director Shakti Soundar Rajan picks an interesting subject wh ich has a good premise, but his execution is of very poor quality. Believability is an essential requirement for fil ms like Teddy and this drama/animation is lacking in this department. Most of the scenes are illogical.Editing sh ould have been better. Background music is impressive and the opening song is good to hear. Cinematography is impressive. Animation works are of top-tier quality and the way in which the teddy bear is shown as a living creature is to be appreciated.
