Movie Review-:
Parari is a film that unabashedly talks a bout the caste and linguistic pride th at people display by suppressing the u nde rprivileged. At the beginning of the film, we are shown a pig raised by Maran’s op pressed community, running wi ld in the streets of the village. The humans, along with Maran, try to catch the pig, which creates tension in the caste-based com munity. As if that wasn’t eno ugh, the ne xt step in the film is when t he dominant caste community unleas hes their wrath on Maran and co who have come to pray at a temple on a hill top and soon chases them away. Now, if you still don’t unders tand what kind of film this is, the next st op is how som e of the Maran communit y’s meat-eat ing habits are looked down upon, and as punishment, the water sup ply to the ir village is cut off. Again, if yo u are sti ll unclear about the film, comes the cli max, which involves a group of pe ople stripping the lead pair, Black and Bl ue, and attacking them. Parari is at pains t o show the fury of oppression.
Parari intervenes in two types of social conflicts, one based on linguistic ground s and the other on caste hierarchy. Whi e the film begins with the latter, the gro up is soon recruited by a Karnatak a-ba sed juice factory, where Tamil workers are caught up in the state’s patriotic gro up, where linguistic pride reigns supre me. The Tamils are beaten do wn, and t he film is left with a bleak pic ture of wh at it wants to say. It ultimately beco mes a film that shows the viol ence inflicted on the oppressed, which is ostensiblly a bout the actions and not the greater tra agedy hidden behind them.
The second half of Parari focuses mainl y on national pride in Karnataka, how workers from other states are treate d, and finally joins in with the most we ll-known feud running between Karna ta aka and Tamil Nadu; the Cauvery wa ter dispute. By cramming a myriad of s ocio-economic issues into one film, Parrari fa ils to do so, even though he want s to tal k about the outsider syndrome . Instead, it bites off more than it can c hew, and w e are left bewildered in un derstanding the seriousness of these issues. The cli mactic scenes of Parari ta ke great adva ntage of the audience to how brutality and violence, instead of which the film should have depicted t he same sensibly.
Parari deals with two issues that need to be talked about. But by taking on th e responsibility of giving voice to both, th e film dilutes the understanding and its direction. Instead, it becomes a nois y film of violence.
