Movie Review-;

Something that strikes you directly in the underlying scenes of Theal is the way calm it is for a movie including savagery. The scenes work out in a slow way, there is part of quiet, permitting the scenes to inhale, the pitiful st ylish visual tone, with irritable lighting (the cinematography is by Vignesh Vasu), strikes simultaneously. Every one of these adds to make the film very captivating. It is then that you understand how successfully debutant director Harikumar (a notable choreographer and entertainer as of now) has imbibed the essence of this film’s inspiration – Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta (2012).

The filmmaker introduces the Korean film’s impact dire ctly in the title card, including a card to say thanks to Kim Ki-duk, who is given story credit.Adaptations of foreig n films into the Tamil language have always been risky business as they have mostly worked out in the wrong wa ys than the right ones, but Hari Kumar has successfully put together an efficient film in Theal, which is the last of the lot to hit the screens for the Pongal weekend.

The Prabhu Deva starrer, based on Kim Ki Duk’s Korean drama Pieta, is a drowsy yet impactful film based on a mother-son relationship.Durai (Prabhu Deva) is a man who works for a loan shark Paulraj (Shatru). Paulraj earns big by lending money to people at the Koyambedu market, but when they fail to return it with the interest, he ca lls Durai who in turn beats them up and takes their wealth to break even. Durai is a zero in his personal life, living a solitary life that finds company in food, alcohol and violence.

However, his dark life takes a big turn when an el derly woman turns up at his door and claims that she is his mother. Durai is not able to accept the fact at first, pu shing her away and even beating her up. But as time passes, he develops an affection towards her, which then ins tills a change in his day-to-day behaviour as well.   Theal has a very interesting premise that captures our attent ion. Hari Kumar’s presentation is extremely basic, reminding us of films that came out ten years ago.

The director does not glue in any new techniques in the making process, uses a very worn out color tone and do es his best to bring about the theme of the film by the essence of its visuals alone. After establishing the storyline in the first 30 minutes, he sows many gut-wrenching scenes between Prabhu Deva and Eeswari Rao into the film, which are a little tough to watch but do create an impact whatsoever. It is this range of tension that Harikumar creates that helps us invest our attention in Theal, but at the same time, it does not come without the commer cial compromises which are a scare for a film in this region. There’s also a sense that the film is a bit artificial tow ards the end, which sucks out the actual impact that it holds in hand. Theal from its source content are the roma nce and comedy tracks that are put into it, involving Yogi Babu and Samyukhtha Hegde.

These scenes may act as breathers when they come right after the ones which are a little tough to digest, but as the film progresses, it does feel like speed breakers. However, Theal pulls up its socks and moves briskly in the final stretch, where it pulls up lots of surprises, many of which are a bit shocking and unpredictable  This is one of Prabhu Deva’s most unique performances in his career, as he pulls off a role where he does not have to perform comedy, dance or even smile. The actor carries out a stiff body language and a straight face throughout the film, showcasing his anger and rage in many ways. As much as Prabhu Deva impresses in the film, Eeswari Rao does an equally good job too. The actress proves her mettle once again in a tough role that needs her to pull off different types of emotions, and it all comes together superbly in the climax. With these two being the two main characte rs in the film, the other actors don’t have much to do and try their best to do justice to their parts.

Vignesh Vasu’s cinematography is shabby and old-school, and some better visuals would have definitely pumped up Theal’s overall quality better. The film has some good songs by Sathya, who also empathizes with the emotio nal value for the background score. It is pretty clear that Hari Kumar has done a neat job while translating the co ntinuous intensity of Pieta into the Tamil commercial format for Theal. The film has a few good dialogues (even though Prabhu Deva does not speak much overall), and there is an emotional undercurrent that travels well and ends well. It is only in his artificiality and tacky making structure that the film gets bobbed down from its streng ths, and is reduced to an engaging affair where it could have been even more. But at the end of the day, Theal is a fine watch for those looking for intense dramas that deal with emotions that would be relatable to one and all. Dance master Harikumar, who has acted as a hero in films like Thoothukudi, Madurai Sambhavam and Bodinay akkanoor Ganesan, is making his directorial debut with Theal .

In the Kayambedu market in Chennai, a gang is robbing traders by paying interest. Prabhu Deva has been doing the heinous job of beating up people who do not pay interest and getting money back from them.Prabhu Deva, who has been disrespecting his mother, suddenly changes and starts living with his mother. But the victims of Prabhudeva begin to take revenge on him.

At one point the mother puts on a twist. What happens after that is the rest of the story of the film.Prabhu Deva has given prominence to stunt scenes in the film. Eswari Rao has excelled. No matter how many Amma Sentiment films have come out in Tamil cinema, this film is completely different. The heroine Samyukta Hegde has no character to speak of. Comes only in some scenes. Yogi Babu completes the comedy scenes as usual.The background music for the film is OK. The songs are about variety.

Glamor + stabbing may have removed the songs. This “Theal” movie is a must watch movie as it accurately rec ords the pain and suffering of many families who are struggling with debt and the loss of a family member in need of money in daily life. Prabhu Deva, the protagonist of the story, could not understand anything so easily. Thus he could not find work anywhere. Eventually he works as a servant to a grandfather.

After a while, when Prabhu deva becomes a small benefactor, Eeswarirao comes saying that I am your mother. Prabhudeva refuses to accept this.Prabhu Deva, who saw Eeswarira’s affection on the way, wondered if Eeswarirao would be his mother. The rest of the story is why Eeswarirao was killed in the end and whether Prabhudeva took revenge until he killed him. Prabhu Deva, who is always dancing and comedy, has shown a different acting in this film.

Prabhu Deva is athletically matched as the hero for the action storyline. Next Easwarirao gets praise for his parallel performance to Prabhudeva. Samyukta as the heroine and Yogibabu as the comedian have done their part. Although there are only two songs in the film, composer Satya has given it to enjoy as well. Director Hari kumar has directed the film with a mix of action, sentiment, comedy and thriller for the fans to enjoy
